Happy National Nutrition Month!
March is here, which means ONIE is celebrating National Nutrition Month! This year’s theme is “Go Further with Food”, a campaign to encourage us all to cut back on food waste while also saving money. Here at ONIE, we understand how costly it can be to throw away food so we came up with a few tips to help keep money in your pockets and “Go Further with YOUR Food”:
Plan your meals for the week before you go shopping and buy only the things needed for those meals.
Make your shopping list based on how many meals you’ll eat at home.
Plan an “eat the leftovers” night each week.
Check your refrigerator and cupboards first to avoid buying food you already have, keep track of a list each week of what needs to be used up and plan upcoming meals around it
Freeze, preserve, or can surplus fruits and vegetables - especially when it’s in season!.
Freeze food such as bread or meat that you know you won’t be able to eat in time.
Use it all. When cooking, use every piece of whatever food you’re cooking with, whenever possible.
Repurpose leftover vegetable and meat scraps in homemade stocks (See these two popular holiday recipes for inspiration: Leftover Christmas Ham & Leftover Turkey Enchiladas ) and use citrus fruit rinds and zest to add flavor to other meals.
Store foods like chips/cereal/crackers, etc in airtight containers to make them last longer once the packaging has been opened!
