It's a New Year! Get Moving Indoors!

The start of a new year offers a perfect chance to set and reach new goals such as getting yourself and your family physically active more often. A good way to start this goal is to go outside and enjoy a nice walk or run. But if you’re not a fan of the cold it might be hard to step out of your warm home to do this. Instead of staying inside and waiting for the cold to pass, check out these tips on how to get moving in 2014 while staying indoors.

Take the Stairs

When you can, choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator. Taking the stairs is a great way to get moving. It can be done throughout the day and can actually take less time than an elevator. Taking the stairs also provides a wide range of health benefits and can help to relieve stress, build stamina, and boost your heart rate.

Indoor Play with the Family

Playing games inside with the family is also a good source of activity. Games such as Simon Says and dances like the Hokey Pokey can get the whole family moving together without having to leave your home.

Chores/Housework

Physical activity doesn’t have to be planned out. It can be added in to any part of the day and to any activity. For example, did you know that housework is considered physical activity? Cleaning is a good way to get your heartbeat up and can be done in small, ten minute intervals.

Free Fitness Classes

Community centers and libraries offer group activity classes as well as free team sports that both children and adults can get involved in. Look online at your local community center and library’s events page to see what type of classes are offered and when.

Free Exercise Videos

Libraries offer a wide range of free exercise videos that you and your family can enjoy doing in the comfort of your home. The internet also offers a great source of videos that can be viewed for free.

Walking the Mall

Lastly, try visiting one of your local malls for a good daily dose of physical activity. Malls open early and provide a climate controlled location where you can walk alone or with your family. Many malls even have “mall-walking” clubs.
