Our kids need all the love they can get.  Show your love by making these silly treats ONIE created in our test kitchen. They are fun snacks that kids can enjoy both at home and at school!

Juice Box Valentines

Materials:Valentine's craft ideas from ONIE Project

  • 100% fruit juice boxes
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Glue
  • Tape

Steps:

  1. Remove straw from back of juice box if attached. Cover box with construction paper by wrapping paper tightly around the box and fix it in place with tape.
  2. Decorate juice box in any way you choose. We used construction paper hearts, googly eyes, and markers for smiley faces. Use glue to fix decorations to box.
  3. If desired, write a love-filled Valentine’s Day message on the box.

Butterfly Baggies

Materials:Valentine's craft ideas from ONIE Project

  • Zip-top sandwich bags
  • Clothespins
  • Markers
  • Pipe cleaners (various colors)
  • Googly eyes
  • Various snacks of your choice

Steps:

  1. Decorate clothespins as desired.
  2. Divide the bag into two equal halves using the clothespin.
  3. Measure out 1/3 cup of snack of your choice and add to one side of bag. Repeat with different snack for other side.
  4. Seal bag and clamp pipe cleaner in the top of clothespin.

Tip: Try adding different snacks to add more food groups. We had vegetables, fruit, and grains!

Valentine Trail Mix

We made two kinds of love-filled trail mix: sweet and savory.

Healthy Valentine's trail mix recipe

Trail Mix (Sweet)

Yield: 3 cups, (6) ½ cup servingsONIE Project: Healthy Valentine's Trail Mix Nutrition Facts

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup strawberry frosted shredded wheat cereal
  • 1 cup bran flakes with dried strawberries
  • ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¼ cup shredded coconut
  • ¼ cup peanuts

Steps:

  1. Measure out ingredients and add to large bowl. Mix well.

Trail Mix (Savory)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup light popcorn
  • 1 cup multi-grain toasted o’s cereal
  • ½ cup raisins
  • ¼ cup peanuts
  • ¼ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  1. Measure out ingredients and add to large bowl. Mix well.Sweet Valentine's Day treats from ONIE

Hearty Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

Yield: 1 sandwich

Ingredientes:

  • 2 slices whole-wheat bread
  • 2 Tbsp peanut butter
  • 2 Tbsp strawberry jelly or preserves

Tip: If you do not have a heart-shaped cookie cutter, try making a guide using paper.

Steps:

  1. Spread peanut butter on slice of bread.
  2. Repeat with strawberry jelly or preserves on other slice of bread.
  3. Place bread together to make the sandwich.
  4. Using the heart-shaped cookie cutter or guide tool and a knife, cut around the edges to form heart-shaped sandwich.
