Keeping a New Year’s resolution can be difficult. Many of us have tried and failed year after year. ONIE has 5 helpful tips to increase your chances of not only keeping a New Year’s resolution, but also making it a permanent change.

Set realistic goals

Too often New Year’s resolutions are way to extreme. You can’t expect someone who has never worked out a day in their life to start working out every single day from now on. ONIE suggests setting realistic goals you can build from and sustain like increasing your physical activity by taking a walk a few times a week and building from there.

Start small

Many times when we make a New Year’s resolution we expect to make huge changes over night. ONIE suggests starting with smaller goals you can grow throughout the year. If your goal for this year is to eat healthier, try starting with small changes like adding another serving of vegetables to dinner or trying a new healthy recipe and see how you like it.

Build on your New Year’s resolution throughout the year

Once you’ve made a few small changes you are comfortable with you can add another small goal. If your goal is to completely stop eating fast food in the New Year, try cutting back a little at a time over the year. Making small changes throughout the whole year is much easier than going cold turkey.

Make it a family affair

Keeping a New Year’s resolution can be hard when you have a family. It can also be  difficult to make healthy changes by yourself. ONIE recommends making these changes as a family. Try being more active as a family, encourage your children to eat healthy snacks with Fun Food Activities, or try ONIE’s tips for Easy Ways to Eat More Fruits & Veggies.

Accept that you don’t always have to be perfect to keep your resolution

The best tip ONIE can give you when setting a New Year’s resolution is that it’s ok to break your resolution sometimes. Understanding that you don’t have to be 100% perfect to keep your resolution is key. Making sustainable changes doesn’t have to be all or nothing. There’s definitely wiggle room to have a lazy day or an occasional indulgent meal. Life is all about balance!

We hope ONIE’s 5 tips for setting realistic New Year’s resolutions will help you have a happy and healthy new year!
