Read Across America Day with Health Habits
Read Across America Day!
The National Education Association (NEA) created Read Across America Day twenty years ago to prompt children from all over America to get excited to read. March 2nd was chosen because it is the birthday of one of America’s favorite and inspiring authors, Dr. Seuss. He would be 113 today! Dr. Seuss has positively influenced us with beautiful, catchy, and fun rhymes. We wanted to share a few of our favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss books that promote nutrition and wellness.
Don’t judge until you try!
We all have looked at a new food and quickly made an assumption. It is important to take Dr. Seuss’s advice found in Green Eggs and Ham and at least give it a solid try! (Side note: It can take up to 7 times to try something before we like it.)
You do not like them so you say.
Try them, try them, and you may!
Try them and you may, I say.”
Sam, if you would let me be,
I will try them, and you will see.
I like green eggs and ham!
I do!! I like them, Sam-I-am!”
- Green Eggs and Ham
Be active, it makes you feel good.
No one feels good after sitting around all day. The Cat in the Hat really shows how sitting around all day is not fun. There are tons of ways to be active inside such as dancing, jumping jacks, active games like twister, or some kid-friendly yoga.
“Too wet to go out and too cold to play ball.
So we sat in the house. We did nothing at all.
So all we could do was to Sit! Sit! Sit! Sit!
And we did not like it. Not one little bit.”
-The Cat in the Hat
You can be your own inspiration!
Dr. Seuss filled Oh, The Places You’ll Go! with inspiration! He tells us we have the power to choose and we can do what we put our mind and body towards. We can see throughout this book to go explore, try new things, and be who we choose to be. It isn’t about what other’s think, it’s about what we set our mind to, so if you want to walk a 5K or eat a healthy dinner you can do it!
’You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.”
-Oh, The Places You’ll Go!
Spend today reading and getting inspired by books! Even if it isn’t Dr. Seuss, a book can open up the world of inspiration for you and your family.
