Fall Farmers Markets Are Still Going Strong!

Local Farmers Market

Just because the weather is changing and the leaves are starting to fall doesn’t mean that farmers markets are closing down just yet… in fact, it’s still peak season for many fall veggies such as Okra, peppers, jalapenos, basil, peaches, and eggplant.  This means that fresh fruits and vegetables can still be found at a market near you!

In addition to the freshest produce around, local farmers markets are often a fun experience for the entire family, and many are hosting events this month such as live music, scavenger hunts for the kids, and cooking demonstrations!  What better way to spend a Saturday morning than getting your week’s worth of fresh produce, entertaining the family, and supporting your local farmers!

There are hundreds of markets across the state of Oklahoma, and did you know that there are over 25 farmers markets currently accepting SNAP benefits? Check out this link to find the one closest to you! http://www.onieproject.org/farmersmarkets/

If you don’t know what to do with the fresh produce currently in season, look for recipe cards somewhere at your market!  Many markets carry ONIE’s produce cards that tell you how to best store the produce you just purchased, as well as offer ideas on how to prepare them.

If you don’t see the recipe cards, you can always visit our website for some healthy ideas!  (www.onieproject.org/recipes) or try some of our in season favorites listed here!

Try this fall favorite, Couscous-stuffed Baked Sweet Peppers.
