The ONIE Project designed, printed, and disseminated 215,000 English-language and 25,000 Spanish-language 2017 nutrition calendars, themed “Hearty, Healthy & Homemade.” The theme has become a recognized brand by Oklahomans in all 77 counties across the state. 2017 Calendars are currently being distributed at all OKDHS and OSU extension offices, 1400 Oklahoma food banks, 28 public libraries, 32 public school districts, 20 community health centers and at a variety of community events. Recipes, education materials, photography, and creative aspects of the calendar are original and developed by the ONIE project team. Format and content was based on formative research conducted by ONIE among Oklahomans who are eligible for SNAP and applied social marketing techniques.
Eighteen recipes were ranked with the final 12 recipes to be featured in the calendar chosen by SNAP eligible families. Each month contained a seasonally-appropriate recipe, color-coded nutrition label that matches the “Making Sense of Nutrition Label” tool featured in the supplemental pages, health tips, in-season produce buys, and indication of whether the recipe meets the ONIE “Match 1 for 1” sodium standard.
The supplemental pages strategically feature nutrition education tools to assist and promote core nutrition messages. A list of SNAP accepting Farmers’ Markets across Oklahoma was included to promote fresh, local produce consumption. All nutrition education tools are original ONIE creations that are consistently used in all ONIE materials.
